What is IFF?

Interchange File Format (IFF) is the Amiga multimedia container format used for audio, images, and 3D data on Commodore systems.

What is RA?

RealAudio (RA) is a RealNetworks streaming audio format designed for low-bitrate internet radio and streaming.

When Should You Use IFF vs RA?

IFF vs RA: Key Differences

• •The core technical difference: IFF relies on lossless compression whereas RA uses lossy compression.
• •The switch from lossless compression to lossy compression means you gain significant space savings while accepting minor quality trade-offs.
• •Alpha channel support: RA lacks transparency support, so semi-transparent pixels from the source will be lost.
• •File sizes: IFF files typically range Varies by content type and RA files Very small, for streaming.
• •Use case fit: IFF targets amiga audio, legacy multimedia, mod music and RA targets legacy streaming audio, internet radio — your choice depends on which workflow stage you are serving.

Advantages of IFF

• ✓IFF applies lossless compression specifically calibrated for Amiga audio, legacy multimedia, MOD music.
• ✓IFF enjoys broad native support across operating systems, browsers, and creative tools alike.
• ✓IFF guarantees every bit of the original data survives — no approximations, no shortcuts.
• ✓You will find IFF support built into virtually every tool that handles Amiga audio, legacy multimedia, MOD music — no plugins or converters needed.

Advantages of RA

• ✓RA compresses data using lossy methods, keeping file sizes manageable for Legacy streaming audio, internet radio.
• ✓Industry-wide support means RA files open anywhere — from legacy systems to the latest devices.
• ✓Small file sizes make RA ideal for email, web uploads, and cloud storage.
• ✓From professional software to open-source alternatives, RA works out of the box.

Industry Applications

Best Practices for IFF to RA Conversion

• →Converting IFF to RA: RA uses lossy compression — choose a higher bitrate (320 kbps) for near-CD quality
• →Normalize audio levels before conversion for consistent playback volume
• →RA is optimized for streaming — use it for online distribution
• →Always keep a backup of your original files before converting
• →Choose the appropriate quality settings for your specific use case

Troubleshooting IFF to RA Conversion

• !Clicks or pops in the converted RA → sample rate conversion can introduce artifacts; use a clean multiple of the source rate
• !RA file has silence at the beginning or end → trim the source IFF file before converting to avoid unnecessary padding
• !Stereo image collapsed after converting IFF to RA → verify that the converter preserves channel mapping for multichannel audio
• !The converted RA clips or distorts at peaks → reduce the gain or apply a limiter before conversion to prevent hard clipping
