What is VOC?

Creative Voice (VOC) is a legacy audio format developed by Creative Labs for their Sound Blaster sound cards.

What is MMF?

Synthetic Music Mobile Application Format (MMF/SMAF) is a ringtone format for feature phones, supporting melody and audio playback.

When Should You Use VOC vs MMF?

VOC vs MMF: Key Differences

• •The core technical difference: VOC relies on lossless compression whereas MMF uses lossy compression.
• •Converting from VOC to MMF changes compression type: lossy source becomes smaller but with some quality tradeoff.
• •How transparency is handled: MMF does not support alpha channels — transparent areas in the source will become opaque.
• •Storage footprint: Similar to WAV for PCM audio for VOC vs Very small, under 100KB per ringtone for MMF.
• •VOC is optimized for legacy dos audio, retro computing while MMF is designed for mobile phone ringtones, legacy polyphonic audio — choose based on your specific workflow needs

Advantages of VOC

• ✓VOC applies lossless compression specifically calibrated for Legacy DOS audio, retro computing.
• ✓VOC enjoys broad native support across operating systems, browsers, and creative tools alike.
• ✓VOC guarantees every bit of the original data survives — no approximations, no shortcuts.
• ✓You will find VOC support built into virtually every tool that handles Legacy DOS audio, retro computing — no plugins or converters needed.

Advantages of MMF

• ✓MMF applies lossy compression specifically calibrated for Mobile phone ringtones, legacy polyphonic audio.
• ✓MMF enjoys broad native support across operating systems, browsers, and creative tools alike.
• ✓MMF delivers impressive compression ratios, shrinking files dramatically while keeping visual quality high.
• ✓You will find MMF support built into virtually every tool that handles Mobile phone ringtones, legacy polyphonic audio — no plugins or converters needed.

• →Normalize audio levels before conversion for consistent playback volume
• →MMF excels in professional audio workflows
• →Always keep a backup of your original files before converting
• →Choose the appropriate quality settings for your specific use case

Troubleshooting VOC to MMF Conversion

• !Clicks or pops in the converted MMF → sample rate conversion can introduce artifacts; use a clean multiple of the source rate
• !MMF file has silence at the beginning or end → trim the source VOC file before converting to avoid unnecessary padding
• !Stereo image collapsed after converting VOC to MMF → verify that the converter preserves channel mapping for multichannel audio
• !The converted MMF clips or distorts at peaks → reduce the gain or apply a limiter before conversion to prevent hard clipping
