What is VOX?

Dialogic VOX is a compressed speech audio format optimized for telephony systems, voice mail, and interactive voice response.

What is MP2?

MPEG Layer II (MP2) is an audio codec standard in broadcast and DVD, offering robust compression for professional use.

When Should You Use VOX vs MP2?

VOX vs MP2: Key Differences

• •VOX uses lossy compression while MP2 uses lossy compression — both take the same approach to file size management.
• •Neither format changes compression philosophy — both are lossy compression — so any size differences are due to encoding efficiency, not a shift in quality approach.
• •How transparency is handled: MP2 does not support alpha channels — transparent areas in the source will become opaque.
• •VOX files are typically Very small, ideal for voice storage while MP2 files range Smaller than uncompressed, 128-384kbps
• •Primary audience: VOX is built for telephone systems, voice mail, ivr systems scenarios, while MP2 focuses on broadcast audio, dvd audio tracks, legacy video — pick the format that matches your output requirement.

Advantages of VOX

• ✓At its core, VOX relies on lossy encoding — a design choice that makes it perfect for Telephone systems, voice mail, IVR systems.
• ✓You won't run into compatibility issues with VOX — it's a universal standard across platforms.
• ✓File size management with VOX: aggressive compression with minimal visible quality loss.
• ✓Every major application in the Telephone systems, voice mail, IVR systems space supports VOX natively.

Advantages of MP2

• ✓MP2 compresses data using lossy methods, keeping file sizes manageable for Broadcast audio, DVD audio tracks, legacy video.
• ✓Industry-wide support means MP2 files open anywhere — from legacy systems to the latest devices.
• ✓Small file sizes make MP2 ideal for email, web uploads, and cloud storage.
• ✓From professional software to open-source alternatives, MP2 works out of the box.

• →Normalize audio levels before conversion for consistent playback volume
• →MP2 excels in professional audio workflows
• →Always keep a backup of your original files before converting
• →Choose the appropriate quality settings for your specific use case

Troubleshooting VOX to MP2 Conversion

• !Clicks or pops in the converted MP2 → sample rate conversion can introduce artifacts; use a clean multiple of the source rate
• !MP2 file has silence at the beginning or end → trim the source VOX file before converting to avoid unnecessary padding
• !Stereo image collapsed after converting VOX to MP2 → verify that the converter preserves channel mapping for multichannel audio
• !The converted MP2 clips or distorts at peaks → reduce the gain or apply a limiter before conversion to prevent hard clipping
