What is FODT?

OpenDocument Flat XML (FODT) is a plain-text XML representation of ODT documents, ideal for version control and automated processing.

What is TXT?

TXT (Plain Text) is the simplest text format, containing only unformatted text without any styling, images, or metadata.

When Should You Use FODT vs TXT?

FODT vs TXT: Key Differences

• •FODT uses lossless compression while TXT uses lossless compression — both take the same approach to file size management.
• •Since both FODT and TXT use lossless compression, the quality characteristics are comparable — differences in file size come down to how efficiently each format implements compression.
• •Alpha channel support: TXT lacks transparency support.
• •Storage footprint: Larger than ODT due to uncompressed XML for FODT vs 1KB to 1MB for TXT.
• •Primary audience: FODT is built for version control, xml processing of documents scenarios, while TXT focuses on simple text, data exchange — pick the format that matches your output requirement.
