What is OTT?

OpenDocument Text Template (OTT) is a reusable document template format for LibreOffice and OpenOffice word processors.

What is EML?

EML is the standard email file format following RFC 822, used by most email clients for message storage and export.

When Should You Use OTT vs EML?

OTT vs EML: Key Differences

• •OTT and EML diverge on compression: lossless compression for the source, lossless compression for the target.
• •Both formats share lossless compression, so quality behavior is similar across the two — file size differences come from algorithm efficiency rather than compression philosophy.
• •Alpha channel support: EML lacks transparency support.
• •OTT files are typically Small template files while EML files range Small for plain text, larger with attachments
• •Use case fit: OTT targets document templates, letterheads, form letters and EML targets email export, message archiving, mail migration — your choice depends on which workflow stage you are serving.

Advantages of OTT

• ✓The lossless nature of OTT means file sizes stay reasonable while handling Document templates, letterheads, form letters efficiently.
• ✓From mobile devices to enterprise servers, OTT is recognized and supported everywhere.
• ✓The trade-off for OTT's perfection is larger files — but for archival work, it is worth every megabyte.
• ✓OTT is a first-class citizen in all major software ecosystems, from creative suites to development environments.

Advantages of EML

• ✓At its core, EML relies on lossless encoding — a design choice that makes it perfect for Email export, message archiving, mail migration.
• ✓You won't run into compatibility issues with EML — it's a universal standard across platforms.
• ✓File size management with EML: larger files guaranteed to match the original exactly.
• ✓Every major application in the Email export, message archiving, mail migration space supports EML natively.

Common Use Cases for OTT to EML Conversion

• Project proposals
• Invoice and billing documents
• Onboarding materials
• Policy and procedure manuals
• Grant applications
• Case studies and whitepapers

Industry Applications

Best Practices for OTT to EML Conversion

• →Before converting OTT to EML, review the document structure — multi-column layouts, text boxes, and floating images behave differently across formats
• →Export a PDF preview alongside the EML file so you have a reference of how the document should look
• →Check that hyperlinks and cross-references survived the OTT to EML conversion — some formats handle links differently
• →Run a spell check before conversion to avoid propagating errors into the final document
• →Keep the original editable file in case the conversion introduces layout shifts
• →Test the output on at least two different applications or devices

Troubleshooting OTT to EML Conversion

• !OTT to EML formatting looks off → complex layouts with tables and columns may shift between formats
• !Fonts render differently in EML → embed fonts or use standard web-safe fonts before converting
• !Images missing from the EML output → ensure images are embedded in OTT, not linked externally
• !Tracked changes disappeared after converting OTT to EML → some document formats don't support revision tracking
