What is XLS?

XLS is the legacy binary spreadsheet format used by Microsoft Excel 97-2003, still widely supported by spreadsheet applications.

What is PPTX?

PPTX is the modern XML-based presentation format used by Microsoft PowerPoint for slides, animations, and business presentations.

When Should You Use XLS vs PPTX?

XLS vs PPTX: Key Differences

• •XLS and PPTX diverge on compression: lossy compression for the source, lossy compression for the target.
• •Neither format changes compression philosophy — both are lossy compression — so any size differences are due to encoding efficiency, not a shift in quality approach.
• •How transparency is handled: PPTX does not support alpha channels — transparent areas in the source will become opaque.
• •XLS files are typically 50KB to 5MB while PPTX files range 500KB to 50MB with media
• •Primary audience: XLS is built for legacy spreadsheets, older systems scenarios, while PPTX focuses on presentations, slides, business meetings — pick the format that matches your output requirement.
