What is BPG?

Better Portable Graphics (BPG) is a modern image format based on HEVC video compression, offering excellent compression efficiency.

What is HDR?

Radiance HDR is an image format that stores high dynamic range pixel data, commonly used for HDRI environment maps and lighting.

When Should You Use BPG vs HDR?

BPG vs HDR: Key Differences

• •The core technical difference: BPG relies on lossy compression whereas HDR uses lossless compression.
• •Moving from BPG (lossless) to HDR (lossless) means the output file will be larger — but every bit of the original is preserved.
• •How transparency is handled: HDR supports transparency, so alpha information is preserved during conversion.
• •Storage footprint: 30-50% smaller than JPEG at same quality for BPG vs 5-30MB for typical HDR maps for HDR.
• •Use case fit: BPG targets web images with superior compression and HDR targets hdri lighting, panoramic photography — your choice depends on which workflow stage you are serving.

Advantages of BPG

• ✓BPG applies lossy compression specifically calibrated for Web images with superior compression.
• ✓BPG enjoys broad native support across operating systems, browsers, and creative tools alike.
• ✓BPG delivers impressive compression ratios, shrinking files dramatically while keeping visual quality high.
• ✓You will find BPG support built into virtually every tool that handles Web images with superior compression — no plugins or converters needed.

Advantages of HDR

• ✓HDR compresses data using lossless methods, keeping file sizes manageable for HDRI lighting, panoramic photography.
• ✓Industry-wide support means HDR files open anywhere — from legacy systems to the latest devices.
• ✓Lossless quality makes HDR the gold standard for archival and master copies.
• ✓From Adobe Photoshop to open-source alternatives, HDR works out of the box.

Common Use Cases for BPG to HDR Conversion

• Video thumbnail creation
• Certificate and badge design
• Websites and online content
• Print materials and publications
• Social media posts and ads
• Digital photography and editing

Industry Applications

Best Practices for BPG to HDR Conversion

• →Before converting BPG to HDR, decide whether you need maximum quality or smallest file size — this determines which format truly fits
• →Save a master copy in a lossless format before converting to HDR — you cannot recover detail lost during lossy compression
• →Check the color profile: BPG images may use a wider gamut than HDR supports, causing a visible shift after conversion
• →Resize images to the final display dimensions before converting — this avoids unnecessary processing of oversized files
• →Run a single test conversion first to verify quality meets your standards
• →Strip unnecessary metadata to reduce file size after conversion
