What is ICNS?

Apple Icon Image (ICNS) is the native icon format for macOS, supporting multiple resolutions including Retina in a single file.

What is RAF?

Fujifilm Raw Format (RAF) contains raw sensor data from Fujifilm X-Series and GFX cameras with unique X-Trans sensor processing.

When Should You Use ICNS vs RAF?

ICNS vs RAF: Key Differences

• •ICNS uses lossless compression while RAF uses lossless compression — both take the same approach to file size management.
• •Neither format changes compression philosophy — both are lossless compression — so any size differences are due to encoding efficiency, not a shift in quality approach.
• •Transparency: N/A
• •ICNS files are typically 100KB to 5MB for multi-resolution icons while RAF files range 20-50MB per photo
• •Primary audience: ICNS is built for macos application icons, retina display icons scenarios, while RAF focuses on fujifilm photography, film simulation processing — pick the format that matches your output requirement.

Advantages of ICNS

• ✓The lossless nature of ICNS means file sizes stay reasonable while handling macOS application icons, Retina display icons efficiently.
• ✓From mobile devices to enterprise servers, ICNS is recognized and supported everywhere.
• ✓The trade-off for ICNS's perfection is larger files — but for archival work, it is worth every megabyte.
• ✓ICNS is a first-class citizen in all major software ecosystems, from creative suites to development environments.

Advantages of RAF

• ✓RAF uses lossless compression tailored for Fujifilm photography, film simulation processing.
• ✓RAF is supported natively on virtually every device, browser, and operating system.
• ✓RAF files are bit-for-bit perfect, preserving every pixel and sample for professional work.
• ✓RAF integrates seamlessly with all major photo editing tools and workflows.
