What is 3G2?

3GPP2 (3G2) is a multimedia container format developed for CDMA mobile networks, supporting video and audio streaming.

What is VC1?

VC1 files are built around lossy compression. Designed for blu-ray video, windows media, xbox game videos, they use the video/vc1 MIME type and typically range from varies by content.

When Should You Use 3G2 vs VC1?

3G2 vs VC1: Key Differences

• •3G2 and VC1 diverge on compression: lossy compression for the source, lossy compression for the target.
• •Neither format changes compression philosophy — both are lossy compression — so any size differences are due to encoding efficiency, not a shift in quality approach.
• •Alpha channel support: VC1 handles transparency.
• •VC1 files tend to be differently sized than 3G2
• •Primary audience: 3G2 is built for legacy mobile video, mms messages scenarios, while VC1 focuses on blu-ray video, windows media, xbox game videos — pick the format that matches your output requirement.

Advantages of 3G2

• ✓3G2 compresses data using lossy methods, keeping file sizes manageable for Legacy mobile video, MMS messages.
• ✓Industry-wide support means 3G2 files open anywhere — from legacy systems to the latest devices.
• ✓Small file sizes make 3G2 ideal for email, web uploads, and cloud storage.
• ✓From professional software to open-source alternatives, 3G2 works out of the box.

Advantages of VC1

• ✓VC1 applies lossy compression specifically calibrated for Blu-ray video, Windows Media, Xbox game videos.
• ✓VC1 enjoys broad native support across operating systems, browsers, and creative tools alike.
• ✓VC1 delivers impressive compression ratios, shrinking files dramatically while keeping visual quality high.
• ✓You will find VC1 support built into virtually every tool that handles Blu-ray video, Windows Media, Xbox game videos — no plugins or converters needed.
